How I Got Started in Online Marketing – A Mother’s Perspective

I wanted to talk to you about how I got started in online marketing and how I got here. Before I get to the heart of the matter, I want you to know that I chose affiliate marketing for the freedom to work anywhere and to make my own money. There are many reasons why people fail with affiliate marketing. They can range from simple laziness, using the wrong tools, taking the wrong advice or losing interest in your niche. This will be a very candid outline of my journey over the last 10 years where I have randomly dabbled in affiliate marketing  as well as other ways to make money online. But in the end, I am making my own money for myself.

Ok… goes!

Shortly after I moved to Ireland I had a baby. She was perfect. Like a lot of women, I wanted to be able to contribute to the household financially while still looking after my daughter full-time. That, in itself, is a difficult feat to accomplish. I have over 20 years as an administrative assistant. I’ve also been a mutual funds account representative, a network administrator, web designer and administrator, and an IT trainer. A real jack-of-all-trades, if you will.

I took a part-time job that allowed me to work nights while my husband worked days. We had, what we liked to call, a “changing of the guard” around 5pm each day. I’d go do my night-shift and hubby would look after our daughter in the evenings. I then worked full-time for four years as a network administrator. Part of my job was to be on call every other week. The turning point came when I came into the house one evening and my then 5-year old ran up to meet me at the door begging me to play with her. A million things are going through my mind. First of which was to take my coat off! 😀 Then my phone went off! I had barely gotten in the door and found out that I had to turn around and drive an hour back to my job and sort out network problems because I was on call that week.

What’s More Important?

work from home challengeA 5-year old doesn’t understand this. She had a melt down. There was no consoling her. She wanted her mommy and she didn’t care or understand why I had to walk out that door again. That was a turning point for me. I realized in that moment that I had wanted a family my whole life yet I wasn’t there for her when she needed me. A few months later I left my job. We took a hit financially but it has always been worth it. I was on call for my daughter instead 24/7 and that’s the way I liked it. I took a few part-time jobs but they were always flexible enough so that I was always the one who dropped my daughter off at school and picked her up. My job was never more important than my role as a mom. I knew I’d only get one shot at this and I wanted to do it right. How could you resist that face, right?

My Path to Financial Freedom

Eventually, I started to look for ways to make money from home. I fell for ads where I had to PAY with my credit card to place my work from home challengeads. The idea was that the more money you spent, the better placement your ad received and I’d be paid per click. No money made there. Then came surveys. The problem with the survey sites was that I wasn’t getting paid any real money. Payment was made with gift cards and vouchers and such. I can’t pay bills with that.

Here Are Some Legitimate Ways to Get Started

Then I found a way to learn how to make money online for free. I didn’t really take it seriously at first. I’ll be the first to admit that. Back then it was a bit complicated for me. I tried and failed at a few different sites. I realize now that the reason I failed was because I didn’t follow the training. I decided that a little shortcut here and there would do the trick. It didn’t. But I learned a lot from those costly lessons.

Starting All Over – AGAIN!

I started back again in 2012. This time I followed the training. I completed every task, every lesson and participated in the community. But I needed to know more. Around Thanksgiving each year, there’s an incredible Black Friday deal where you can buy a 1-year membership for $299. That’s almost 50% off a yearly membership. It only lasts for a week. I couldn’t let that opportunity pass me by knowing there was so much more I wanted access to so I became a Premium member.

 Why I’m Still There

The best part about this training program is that it’s free. You can stay a member there for as long as you want for FREE. You don’t have to buy a premium membership if you don’t want to. There are a lot of benefits to a paid membership but you can still be successful as a free member. You can still get help in Live Chat. You can still submit questions for people to answer and there’s always someone who has the answers. You still get two free websites.

I’ve done reviews on other similar programs that teach a lot of the same things but those programs are not free. So I’ve had an opportunity to compare this program to other programs. If you are looking to learn how to get started in online marketing, this free training program can definitely help you get there.

I stayed as a free member for a few months before I took the plunge. I’ve made a lot of contacts and friends there and I really enjoy the community there. I am very comfortable with the new skills I have learned as a result of all the training. In fact, I’ve used some of those same tools to generate virtual assistant work so it’s all good!

Can you relate to this? If you can relate to this at all, I’d love to hear your story. Please feel free to chime in below.

  1. Hi, Alanna! I thoroughly enjoyed your article. It kept me reading for sure. You are a talented writer. As a father who was dubbed, “Mr. Mom over a decade ago, I appreciated having work that allowed me to be involved with my own kids much of the week. Keep writing, and stick with your affiliate marketing endeavors. You are your product, and this will have its return. Thanks, Roland.
