Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve heard of Instagram. I wanted to talk to you about how to get started with Instagram because this is my own personal journey. But I’ll also include plenty of information and links. This post is for people who are on the fence about joining Instagram.
With all the social media apps out there, it can be tough to try and keep up with them all. But when you are in business, getting the word out about your products or services is crucial. And Instagram is a great tool to help you reach your audience.
What Is Instagram?
Instagram started out as a photo sharing app and is owned by Facebook. It was originally launched in 2010 and it was exclusive to iOS only. The Android version was released in April 2010. There are plenty of people out there who enjoy sharing their photos without necessarily needing the option to write a lot about the photo. Using filters on your photos also makes Instagram more appealing. Not to mention you can also share videos.
As a social media network, it’s similar to Facebook where you can comment, like, follow, tag and private message other users. And Facebook has made it very easy to create an account using your Facebook credentials.
The popularity of Instagram has exploded in recent years. From influencers, celebrities, personal people you know, business people in your area and beyond as well as businesses like wedding planners, event planners and photographers.
Why Should I Get Instagram?
The main reason to get on Instagram is because it is an incredibly powerful social media tool you can use to connect with your audience in addition to other social networking tools. No matter what niche you are in, chances are your audience is hanging out on Instagram. People respond very well to visual stimulus so Instagram ticks all the boxes.
I’ll be honest with you. I’ve been putting Instagram off for a long time! But I can’t deny the appeal of Instagram. Why am I telling you all this? I guess because I think there are more people out there like me who have resisted jumping on Instagram for one reason or another.
Here were my reasons not to join Instagram:
- Didn’t want to have yet one more social media account to manage
- Didn’t really know if I would have an audience there
- Didn’t know how to use it
- Didn’t know how much time it would take to get up to speed with Instagram
- Didn’t know if I could dedicate the time to posting regularly
Do any of the excuses above sound familiar to you? Notice all the “didn’ts?” So what are my reasons now for jumping into the Instagram pool? Because I know my audience is hanging out on Instagram. I’ve also read a lot of posts about how effective it is for online businesses. And who couldn’t use more visitors to their website? If my audience is hanging out on Instagram, why not go hang out with my audience?
Here are a few reasons why YOU SHOULD JOIN INSTAGRAM
- Most everyone that has a social media account has an Instagram account
- Increase the visibility of your business by using hashtags
- Connect with influencers and partner with them
- An additional way to engage with your audience
- You can make money directly from Instagram
Is your audience on Instagram?
To find out if your audience is on Instagram, take a look at your competitors. Are they on Instagram? Look at your competitors’ accounts and see how many followers they have. Then take a look at the list of followers. If you really want to get into the heads of your audience, check out this article by Jeff Bullas about researching Instagram competitors. In this article he references a piece of software called Combin. There’s a free version of this software you can try out. I haven’t had any experience using this software yet but I’m encouraged by the fact that there’s a free version you can use for one Instagram account. A great way to test it out. First Steps to Getting Started With Instagram

Create An Instagram Account
What’s the hardest part about creating a social media account for you? For me, it’s coming up with a username! For some, keeping it simple works. Other people like to create cool usernames. I vacillate between the 2 and it depends on the type of account I’m creating. If it’s a personal account, I feel more comfortable creating a cheeky username. But what if it’s for business? If you are trying to connect with your audience, how creative can you afford to be without losing your audience?
If you have a common name, it can be even worse. A name like John Smith will most likely be met with the dreaded “this username is not available. Please try another.” If you have your heart set on using your name you’ll have to add numbers to it before it will be accepted.
