At one time, I was working on five different web sites at a time. I didn’t know how to move a website to a new host. I had all my sites hosted with Hostgator. I started thinking about simplifying things and having everything in one place so I gave serious thought to moving my sites over to Wealthy Affiliate. As a premium member within the affiliate marketing community in Wealthy Affiliate, I can have up to 25 sites hosted there for free. It’s included in my premium membership. When you think about it, it makes perfect sense. Why pay for hosting your sites somewhere else when you can get free hosting with a Wealthy Affiliate membership? It’s really a no-brainer. I just didn’t realize how easy it would be. If I knew it was going to be this easy, I would have done it years ago. As the end of the year approaches, I promised myself that I would look around and simplify things as much as possible. So I’m cleaning house. I’m simplifying my life and my finances.

How to Move a Website to a New Host

So, like I said, my sites were hosted through Hostgator. I have no problem with Hostgator. I just don’t see any reason to pay for a service that I can get for free with my premium membership.

How to get started

On your original site, install the WP Clone plugin. This allows you to do a complete backup of your site. It will also provide you with a link to upload it to your new host location. Here’s a video to help guide you in the process.

After signing into the WA Site Manager and created a test site, I gave the site a name similar to my actual site name. All I had to do then was to click “build site” and it was instantly built with the default WordPress theme that I chose myself.

A default username–admin–was created with a password automatically. Then I logged into my WordPress Dashboard and uploaded the theme I use for that site. You also need to install the WP Clone plugin on your new site. The WP Clone plugin has an address bar for uploading from the original site. For some reason, I ran into problems uploading my site using the WP Clone tool.  I’m not sure what I was doing wrong but rather than beat my head against a wall, I contacted Support. After explaining my problem, I received a response that they could help within 30 minutes! Pretty impressive! They told me that if I could provide a little more information, they would move my site for me. Music to my ears! This way I knew it would be done correctly. Yes, I was a little nervous but that’s only because I’m a bit of a control freak.

No Down Time!

My site was moved and restored to it’s original state in a few hours and there was no down time! I was really thrilled. All I had to do was point my domain to its new location and continue where I left off. I was so impressed by how smoothly the transition went that I went ahead and moved my other sites as well. Again, smooth sailing. Support really took all the headaches out of moving my sites and I was pretty relieved. All that was left to do is to contact Hostgator and cancel my account. Everything is now in place at Wealthy Affiliate.

Another Unexpected Surprise

Once I had everything set up, I started exploring the dashboard. I wanted to make sure I knew where everything was. One thing I found on the site dashboard was site health details. This provided me with details about my site that would help me figure out where I needed to make improvements.

A few things to note about hosting your websites with Wealthy Affiliate:

  • You can only host WordPress websites
  • You’ll need to set up an email account for your website. They are not transferrable. (Very easy to do.)
  • You’ll need to change your DNS settings to point your domain to your new hosting location. (Again, very easy to do.)
  • You will not have access to cpanel. I thought this would be a deal breaker but turns out, I rarely go into cpanel anyway. As long as I have FTP access, I have access to my website files.

One of the great things about hosting your websites with WA is that you get a site health check panel. As you can see above, there are many different areas that are tracked. This is very useful information to help you see where your site needs improvement. This site is a recently revived site. I can tell by taking a quick glance which areas I will need to focus on.
