If you are a mom with some free time on your hands, you may be interested in learning how to work at home with transcription jobs. Legitimate home transcription jobs can be difficult to find. But if you have ever been an administrative assistant, transcription may have been part of your job. Even if you have never done transcription before, this might be worth checking out.
I recently joined Rev.com which is a transcription company with freelancers and clients all over the world. Here’s my Rev.com review. You’ll be surprised by what I found.
What is Rev.com?
Rev.com provides transcription services worldwide and is based out of San Francisco. The company was started in 2010 by 5 MIT students. They now has over 170,000 active users and 40,000 active freelancers in any given month. It was rated one of the best transcription services of 2019 by PC MAG. Rev.com also created two free mobile applications which allow clients to record, upload and store content for transcription. Some pretty big name companies are using Rev.com such as Viacom, CBS, TCM, PBS, Visa and The New York Times.
How Does Rev.com Work?
When you sign up with Rev.com, you will be asked to sign a non-disclosure agreement. You will then have 60 minutes of trial transcription time to get used to the interface, transcribe short assignments and use their formatting guide. The type of work you can do is transcription, captions and foreign titles.
Your work needs to meet compliance standards as outlined in their Style Guide. Your work will be reviewed based on accuracy, formatting, commitment and on-time submission.
As long as you are attentive to detail and submit good quality jobs, you’ll then move up to being a Revver. Once you are a Revver, you will have a lot more jobs to choose from that pay more. The type of transcription ranges from education, medical, legal, video recordings and more.
Who Is Rev.com For?
Rev.com is for anyone that has transcription experience and good typing speed. Even if you’ve never transcribed before, you could still be successful here.
How To Get Started With Rev.com
Before you can start transcribing recordings, you’ll need to pre-qualify. When you sign up, you’ll need to take a short quiz that will demonstrate your knowledge of the English language and your grammar skills. You’ll then transcribe a short recording. If you pass both of those tests, you can then complete the registration process and start your 60-minute trial.
What Equipment You Need
The great news is that you don’t really need any special equipment. You don’t have to buy or download software. You don’t have to have a special headset. All you need is a great Internet connection and a pair of earbuds. I have been using the earbuds that came with my cell phone and they work perfectly.
What We Like About Rev.com
What I really like about Rev.com is that it was so easy to join and get started. Other things I like are:
- You don’t really need any special transcription equipment
- The jobs are browser based so you don’t have to install any software
- Get paid each week
- Easy payment method with Paypal
- Paid training
- Available worldwide
- Very easy to use
- Flexible work schedule
- If you are a great transcriptionist, you can also qualify to become a grader
- A+ rating on BBB (Better Business Bureau)
How Do You Make Money With Rev.com?
After you have your account set up, you can immediately start transcribing. Pay is around .30 to .42 per minute of transcription. Each job is listed with the type of recording such as education, the length of the recording, the pay per minute and pay per transcribed recording. Once you finish transcribing a recording, you submit it for review. Your recording will be rated and you’ll receive an email shortly after submission which will detail your score and where you need to improve. You can then go over your recording and note any improvements that need to be made.
After you complete 60 minutes of transcribing, you’ll qualify as a Revver and you can earn 25% more per audio minute. You can also move up to Revver+ which allows you to see transcription projects before other Revvers. You can check your balance at any time.
When Do Rev.com Transcriptionists Receive Payments?
Payment is made through PayPal and you get paid each Monday. If you don’t have a Paypal account, click here to get started. Below is a screenshot of payments I’ve received from PayPal.
Keep in mind, the screenshot above is simply proof of payment. It’s not indicative of how much money you can make with Rev.com. I really haven’t done that much work for Rev.com yet. I use Rev.com to fill in gaps of time when my work is slow. I just haven’t had that much free time lately!

Rev.com Support For Transcriptionists
Rev.com is headquartered in Austin, TX. In order to contact Rev.com regarding any issues with your transcription, you can email them at firstname.lastname@example.org. Their phone number is 888-369-0701. You can also fill out a form on their Contact Us page.
We’ve talked a bit about the benefits of working for Rev.com. Now let’s check out a few things you may not appreciate.
You must follow the instructions for formatting in the Style Guide. It’s understandable that Rev.com need to be pretty picky here. They want as close to 100% accuracy as possible for their clients. You have 60 minutes of transcription time to comply. After that, if you don’t meet their standards, your account will be deactivated.
Low Pay Rates
When you first look at the transcription time and the pay rate, it can be a little deflating. But keep in mind that initially these are short jobs to test your skills. I haven’t made it past the 60 minutes of transcription yet so I can’t speak to the rates after the trial period but the rates are higher.
Short Turnaround Times
Some of the recordings seem to have short turnaround times. Before you accept a job, be sure to check the time it’s due. You don’t want to turn in any recordings late. This will lower your stats.
You Spend More Time Than You Think
Because I work for myself, I constantly monitor my time. Anyone who’s ever done transcription work before knows that a 5-minute recording can actually take up to 30 minutes to transcribe depending on the quality of the recording, etc. Part of the review process includes the amount of time it takes to transcribe a recording and your typing speed.
But before you submit a recording for review, you need to go back over it to ensure you heard every word. You also need to check your grammar and spelling. Depending on the quality of the recording, you may have to go over your work a few times. None of this extra proofing time is included in the total transcription time. You won’t be paid for transcription time or proofing time. You are only paid for the length of the recording.
Jobs May Be Scarce
There are times when there are no jobs listed. And any jobs that do appear on screen disappear as quickly as they appear! You have to be fast to claim jobs! This is incredibly frustrating when you have set a target income level for yourself for a particular week and there aren’t enough jobs to get you there.
I’ve been a member of Rev.com for over a month now. As you can see by the screenshot above, I’m now at 90% to becoming a Revver. Over the last week, I have had the site open most of the day ready to grab jobs. It’s been impossible. Now that I’m at 90%, there seem to be no jobs. Even when one pops up and I grab it, the screen changes and the job is no longer available. You can see that the job above is claimed. I originally grabbed that job. Then suddenly it was claimed.

Is Rev.com A Scam?
I’ve become very disillusioned with this site. I really wanted to be able to recommend it but I can’t. It might be a good place to get started at home with transcription jobs. I can’t tell you whether it’s a scam or not. What I can tell you is that i completed jobs and got paid. It’s easy to get started with Rev.com and you can start making money immediately. You won’t earn a lot but you’ll be paid for the training you do.
Honestly, this might be a good site to get some practice with online transcription. Rev.com do make that pretty easy but this is by no means a good way to make money online from home. The pay is quite low and jobs eventually become scarce. That part bugs me. You have to keep in mind that this is a global site so you will be competing for work with other people from many different countries and time zones. I’d give this one a miss.
If you have had any experience with Rev.com you’d like to share, please leave a message below. I’d love to hear your thoughts.
